Online Safety reminder

It has come to my attention that some of our students have been participating in downloading scary photos and videos online and sharing them with classmates. It does not appear to have been part of an online challenge, but the content was mainly from a Momo Challenge site, which was very concerning. These photos and videos have been very upsetting for some of our students.

Our school and the Delta School Board believe access and use of technology is an integral component of current learning and working environments. However, the potential for misuse of the Internet exists, even with due diligence.

I am asking parents to have a conversation with your children about the risks associated with engaging with any online challenges, and about safe Internet use. I have attached an Information Bulletin that includes some additional information and resources.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

ABOUT THE CHALLENGE:

This “Momo Challenge” involves users receiving an invitation on social messaging platforms, including WhatsApp and Snapchat, to message an account called “Momo.” That account may then send disturbing images and instructions for various tasks, as well as threats about what will happen if they aren’t carried out.
